Planning a road trip along California’s exquisite coast? Consider including a visit to Arroyo Grande, California, a charming historic city that remains largely undiscovered by tourists.
Arroyo Grande, near the larger city of San Luis Obispo, takes you back in time about 100 years. Stroll leisurely through Arroyo Grande with its wood-slated houses surrounded by white picket fences, an inviting downtown of updated old brick buildings, and a park with a barn, the old schoolhouse, and even a “Carriage Garage.”
And right through the middle of town, Rooster Creek winds along, providing a home for the beloved wild roosters that come out onto the sidewalks each morning to greet the dawn. The swinging bridge that spans the creek is my favorite.
As many times as I have driven up and down the California coast on various routes, I discovered fun, elegant Arroyo Grande only recently. While it’s only four miles inland from Pismo Beach, it’s easy to miss the turnoff on the highway and not know it’s there.

What to see in the historic Village of Arroyo Grande
The Village of Arroyo Grande is the heart of the history and charm of this city. Buildings date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The old downtown features antique shops, cafes, and ice cream. Stroll along Branch Street to take in the atmosphere and discover treats and treasures.
Just behind the shops and restaurants, off the parking lot, you will find the famous swinging footbridge over Arroyo Grande Creek. This 171-foot-long pedestrian suspension bridge was first built in 1875. It spans the Arroyo Grande Creek, which flows quite a way below the bridge.
Ponder this when you visit. This bridge swinging back and forth over vegetation and the creek originally had no sides! In 1905, finally some safety-minded citizen decided to add sturdy railings.
Through updates and remodels, the bridge still sways and it still provides a way over the creek. And it’s great fun to walk on. 
Head to Heritage Square Park
Located just over the bridge from downtown (or a short walk on the street if you prefer), you’ll find Heritage Square Park. Locals gather here for events. And historic buildings that now reside here offer a glimpse into Arroyo Grande’s rich heritage.
There’s an old barn and museums in quaint little homes. The Santa Manuela Schoolhouse is a restored one-room schoolhouse originally built in 1901.
The picturesque Rotary Bandstand hosts community events. These include a Summer Concert Series. From July 4th through September, enjoy free Sunday concerts featuring live music, food trucks, local wine and beer, and raffles supporting local nonprofits.
The lovely open grassy areas and small playground make the park a family-friendly place for a picnic.
Spy the wild roosters that roam the Village
Free-roaming roosters and chickens wander parts of the Village. They’re a quirky and beloved symbol of the town. If you are up at the crack of dawn, you will hear them loud and clear. I wanted to see them and was a little concerned about how my dog would react. He totally ignored them as they sauntered around just a few feet from him.
Visit the Farmers Market on Saturdays
Stroll through the weekly Farmers Market for local produce, crafts, and food vendors. Head for the heart of the village every Saturday morning. You can’t miss it. When I visited it was open from noon to 2:30. Check signs along Branch Street or ask a local for exact hours.
Enjoy local wine tasting
Arroyo Grande Valley is part of a premier wine-growing region. Visit Laetitia Vineyard, Talley Vineyards, or other boutique wineries for tastings with a view.
Explore nearby coastal delights
Pismo Beach and Avila Beach are just a short drive away from Arroyo Grande. Both sit on the water and boast lovely coastal walks and seafood restaurants. Drive just four miles and you will be at the coast at Pismo Beach.
Arroyo Grande makes an excellent base for a day of exploring to the north. Morro Bay, famous for it’s volcanic rock rising above the water, is about a 30-minute drive away.
From there, you can continue north on Highway 1 and stop at quirky Harmony (population 18!). Then a short drive takes you to delightful Cambria. And it’s just another 15-minute drive north to famous Hearst Castle.
Fit in a small, easy hike
The Bob Jones trail is perfect for a short, fairly level hike in the Arroyo Grande area. It’s a paved bike and walking trail also known as the City to the Sea Trail.
To reach the start of the trail, turn off of Highway 101 near Avila Beach onto Ontario Road. The trail ends in downtown Avila Beach.
The Bob Jones Trail lies next to San Luis Obispo Creek. From the parking lot to the end of the trail at Avila Pier is 3 miles.
Dogs are welcome on the trail.
Where to eat in Arroyo Grande
The historic Village offers several delicious choices for dining. Here are a few to check out.
Mason Bar and Kitchen
This inviting, lively restaurant, with its country-chic décor, offers menu items sourced from local, organic farms. The Mason Bar and Kitchen promises food that is non-GMO, antibiotic free, and responsibly harvested. Patrons rave about the carbonara and short ribs.
Be sure to look around the corner for the massive mural celebrating the agrarian heritage of Arroyo Grande.
Rooster Creek Tavern
Dine alfresco in the California warmth at Rooster Creek Tavern. This restaurant rated a repeat visit for me this year! A varied menu features pizza, seafood, pasta, and other delicious offerings. I enjoyed the salmon salad, a tasty, healthy dish.
The staff specializes in making everyone feel welcome. And the patio is dog friendly.
Gina’s Italian Cuisine
If you’re hungry for Italian food, head to Gina’s Italian Cuisine. Delicious Italian dishes such as manicotti and lasagna are served piping hot. I ordered salmon on pasta and it was heavenly!
The patio is delightful on a warm evening and it’s dog friendly.
Café Andreini
Café Andreini was the first Coffee House in Arroyo Grande, established in 1996 by local resident Denise Andreini. Along with coffee, the café serves scrumptious dishes such as avocado toast and breakfast burritos.
Owners say that “coffee isn’t just about a great cup of coffee but its about community.” From greeting regulars to welcoming new faces, the café is an inclusive space for all who come through the doors. When you are in Cafe Andreini, you are family.
Hubbalicious
Top off your lunch or dinner with an ice cream treat from Hubbalicious. Sweets such as fudge and taffy are also here. Pick up something yummy for later or for gifts.
Where to stay in Arroyo Grande

For me, there’s one exceptional choice of hotel in Arroyo Grande. And it’s the Agrarian Hotel, located at the edge of the Village. It’s a convenient walk to restaurants, cafes, the Swinging Bridge, and Heritage Park.
The Agrarian Hotel sits along the Tally Ho Creek, with a walkway under the trees perfect for a short stroll. The room décor is pleasant and modern. All the expected amenities are provided, such as microwaves, coffee makers, and a work desk. The pool is open year-round.
The lobby features two life-size sheep end tables. These are the reason I initially chose this hotel.
The breakfast far exceeds the usual hotel food. With farm-to-table produce, you can enjoy fresh strawberries and oranges. You can bake yourself a waffle and help yourself to a latte.
And the friendly front desk staff can answer any questions about the Village and surrounding areas to get you going on your sightseeing.
Heading south of Arroyo Grande? It’s just an hour and a half drive to the picturesque city of Santa Barbara. Here you can enjoy the harbor and waterfront, iconic Stearns Wharf, historic architecture, and nature.
