Picture a balmy summer evening in the park on Coronado, a delightful island connected to San Diego, California by a curving bridge. People arrive with baskets of food and bright-colored blankets and camp chairs. Leafy trees and palms offer shade as you claim your spot on the lawn. In the Promenade, the U.S. Navy band assembles to give a free concert. The first notes of the brass and woodwinds fill the air, and you are transported to a magical place.
I love watching families enjoy moving to the music. The children fling their arms and twirl and don’t have a care in the world. Even the young at heart dance to the beat.
All ages are welcome. No matter if you’re in a wheelchair or able only to lie on a blanket. You can come and enjoy the music.
Some come to celebrate a special occasion. This is a happy, boisterous place for a party.
Pups are welcome on the perimeter of the park. I like to wander by and say hello to them. Here’s a handsome guy.
Coronado is home to a naval base, and it’s where military families live, both during and after their service. So the band honored them by playing a medley of theme songs for each branch of the military. I’m guessing that, for some vets, the music brings back somber memories.
The Cole Porter songs were a fan favorite, sung by this talented young lady.
My family played games, including Coronado-opoly, complete with play money and properties to sell. And there’s a playground nearby so children can get out their wiggles.
If you are in the San Diego area this summer, plan to take in one of these free concerts. You can check the weekly schedule here. Or find a local concert you would enjoy. You’ll find good food, vibrant music, fresh air, and fun. Best of all, you are part of a friendly community. You’ll leave smiling and refreshed.

I love outdoor concerts like this. Very easy for the whole family! Will have to put it on our list next time we go to CA! #feetdotravel
Perfect! Looks like it was a wonderful day. Outdoor concerts – anything outdoors really – are the best!
It’s magical to watch children dancing and enjoying the world from their little eyes. What a relaxing adventure, I hope to experience this one day, especially since it’s dog-friendly!
Looks an awesome destination to spend a weekend. Thanks for sharing through your photos and words.
Delightful! A concert in the park … I love the way you took me right there through your words and photographs. I look forward to reading more of you
Wow – seems like everyone had a blast at Coronado. I’ve been there when visiting San Diego, but do not remember it very well. Is it the island where the Seals Base is? I remember these isles only vaguely.
Looks like such a great place to make some memories for the whole family! My oldest daughter loves music and dancing – she can´t miss any of the street concerts we come across while on the road lol
I love outdoor concerts! They’re great for a summer activity. I love the photo of the dog! 🙂
A great option to just chill and bond with fanily and friends and to do people watching.
Summertime is just the best! Nothing like free outdoor concerts in the park. I’ve actually never heard of Coronado – good to know! Thanks for linking up with #farawayfiles
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and pictures, Sharon. Loved it. You have such a great eye!
I’ve never attended a concert in the park, but I have been to Coronada many times, and its a great little community. There are so many lovely shops and restaurants, and certainly plenty of beaches to explore. If I ever make it there during a concert I will certainly check it out.
