Saturday in the park,
I think it was the Fourth of July
People dancing, people laughing.
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I’ve been waiting such a long time
For Saturday,
Saturday in the park.
— Chicago
One of the fun times my family enjoys during the summer is a concert and picnic in a local park. We try to get people together at least once during the season to enjoy the music, the outdoors, and the camaraderie as the community gathers.
This year, the Marine Band played old favorites.
Folks arrived by car and bicycle.
Of course there was food in lovely spreads throughout the park.
Flags and red, white, and blue were everywhere, even though it was weeks after the Fourth of July.
Kids and dogs hung out, playing and running.
Towards the end of the concert, the band played a medley of songs from each branch of the military. Those who served stood for their song.
During the Marine’s Hymn, the man sitting near me slowly rose and stood at attention. I wonder what memories went through his mind.
Summer concerts are over now. We head into autumn. I’m already looking forward to next summer, though, and times in the park, with people dancing, laughing, and leaning into life.
How about you? What’s a favorite summer activity you treasure?

A great part of summer.
A wonderful community event – such a nice evening, I’m sure.

This looks like a great P.A.R.T.Y in the park. I wish I could have popped over the Pond to visit this.
Thanks for sharing.

Concerts in the park are so much fun! Great shots of everyone enjoying the event!
We do this in the housing division (on a smaller scale, and without the band, but with fireworks). I really need to insert myself back into attending – family trips and outings generally make us unavailable.
Wonderful observations.
Such a fun song – looks like a fun time, too!
I love the concerts in the park, we have those here as well. Sadly, I was not able to attend as many as in previous years. I love your pictures of the bikes. And the segue… that’s a new one, I haven’t seen those at our concerts, YET!
Looks like a wonderful happening (do you even say that in English? – I’m sure you know what I mean). Yeah, music can bring back a lot of memories, I hope the ex-marine’s ones were good ones…
Aw!!!! you gave me goose bumps! Loved this post… you transported me there! And that black and white pic… the best!
This looks super fun, you captured the even so well.
What a cute mug on that pooch’s face! Thanks for linking up to Song-ography.
That looks like a fun, family gathering. That picture in b&w of the man standing is wonderful, great perspective.
Great photos!! Some of the photos remind me of Renoir’s painting Sunday in the Park. Very nice! Have a wonderful weekend!
What fun! My favorite time of summer is when it is over… I just don’t like the heat. I do get a lot done — my hibernation time. I watched all the festivities for the fourth on TV. Fun post and love the pup!
This looks like such a fun, and festive day!
Chicago? It reminded me of Honolulu 🙂
