The streets of Venice carry boats, not cars. And oh, what a romantic, unique place that makes this ancient port.
Sometimes the canals shimmer quietly, waiting for the next vessel to stir up the water.
Other times, you witness a traffic jam.
The side streets have no names, but the main highway is known as the Grand Canal. This is the Venice depicted in art and photos. I believe it looks much the same as it did when Venice was the trade capital of the world centuries ago.
We arrived on the day of the annual regatta (totally by happy coincidence). Crowds cheered, boats of all shapes and sizes raced along, and a riot of color decorated Venice.
The ambulance motored up and down the canal, on call.
Of course the most famous vessel on the watery streets of Venice is the gondola.
With all the waterways come dozens of bridges, all sizes and styles.
The sun sets, our Perfect Day in Venice ends, but the charm continues.

Ah, what a beautiful place!
Completely, romantically beautiful!
Beautiful images … brought back some great memories for me. Thank you.
Sharon, these are gorgeous! I would love to see Venice in person!
Beautiful photos which brings back wonderful memories of when my husband and I were there in 1973. He was fresh out of the US Navy. We had been living in Spain for 3 years and before going back to the US, we toured 9 countries by Eurail with backpacks, almost 60 days of traveling. Venice was our favorite city, very romantic and colorful, we stayed there 6 days. We had our travel guide, Europe on $5-$10 a Day and pretty much stuck to that, except in a couple of countries where it was more expensive. We met a couple from NY who were spending $100 a day. 🙂

What a beautiful city! You have captured the charm and elegance of Venice in such a simply elegant manner – every picture tells the story of the people and the place. Oh, the photo with the laundry hanging along the building and window – that’s my favorite – swoon!
It certainly is a magic place.
What beautiful photos! A feast for the eyes. BTW… I tried out your travel tip about the compression socks, they worked great. My feet felt so much better after a long flight. Thank You!!

Oh, these are lovely shots of Venice! We didn’t make it to Venice the last time we were in Italy and so far, the closest I’ve gotten to Venice is The Venetian (ugh!). One day… 🙂
Beautiful images, would love to get there one day.
Amazing! Love your photos and now I really want to see it. It looks like a beautiful old city, just as I have seen in movies and photos. I wonder what it is really like to live in a city with roads of water. I also wonder how many people have accidentally lost their clean washing to the canal waters.
Good morning, Sharon. Today is the first time visiting your blog and I have to say I feel like I’ve been all over the world! What a lucky lady you are to travel so much! Thank you for sharing your adventures with this small town lady : )
