What if all adoption fees for shelter animals were waived for a day? Would that be the little nudge folks need to take home a new friend? Yes! Clear the Shelters day last Saturday is a resounding success. The report out the next day is that 17,000 animals have been adopted nationwide. 17,000!
I visited the San Diego Humane Society that day, arriving shortly before opening. Here’s a peek into how Clear the Shelters day went down here.
The reception area buzzes with excitement. People had chosen dogs and cats that caught their interest online. They signed up to meet them. The waiting area fills with hopeful adopters.
Doors open, and people flock into all areas of the shelter. This cutie is the first dog I see.
Some seem to know what’s happening. They seem to say, “How about me? Take me home?? Please?” They pose with the most fetching expressions.
Plenty of staff and volunteers circulate to answer questions, conduct meetings, and make sure the animals are doing well with all the attention.
Helpful signs give information about the personalities of various dogs and cats.
Mr. Vivacious-Enthusiastic-Bubbly-Vibrant-Cheerful gets adopted while I’m watching! His new family leaves him for a few minutes to fill out paperwork. He jumps up looking for them. You’re going home soon, buddy!
My favorite dog is Caydence, a 99.8-pound beauty. Wish I had room for her. Look at that face.
The kitten area is popular, of course.
Some animals display curiosity at all the commotion.
Some contentedly take a morning nap.
How fun to watch introductions. Bonding takes place right before my eyes.
Towards the end of the day, I learned that more than 200 adoptions took place yesterday in the San Diego Humane Society shelters alone. Just think how many furry ones snuggled down to sleep in a new home last night.

Lovely and sad at the same time.
So, so great! A lot of happiness that day, huh!?
That was heartwarming! Thanks for sharing. I have 4 feline girls who were born wild on our property. Two are sisters, 2005, the next one was abandoned in 2006 and the next one was abandoned along with a couple of siblings (that didn’t make it) in 2007. We had them all fixed and I love them all. They each have their own personality.

Heard about this on the news – what a wonderful event for these adorable animals!
What a wonderful initiative and beautiful photos. We have only ever taken on rescue animals, there’s so many out there why would anyone want to buy from breeders. We currently have 3 cats and a dog, though I wish there were room for more! Thanks for sharing.
What a fabulous post and what a wonderful idea as I suspect many people left some sort of donation anyway

So cute. That shepherd mix is beautiful and that black and white cat is a *big* cat.
How nice! It’s a very heartwarming post. I think it was a great idea to wave out the fees for a day. I hope those cuties got into responsible hands.
Thank you for linking up with us
