Up on the Roof

On the roof, it’s peaceful as can be and there the world below won’t bother me.       So when I come home feeling tired and beat, I’ll go up where the air is fresh and sweet, up on the roof.                                                                      —  James Taylor

This view of the rooftops is Venice came to my mind as soon as I heard this week’s Song-ography song, “Up on the Roof.”

People in Venice do hang out on their roofs. They build a sanctuary, put up awnings, cultivate gardens.

There’s a good reason for seeking out a rooftop in Venice. Streets are narrow, yards nonexistent, and roadways are formed from water.

Where I live, you can’t sit on the roof under the stars. But we have plenty of places to go where the world seems far away. My favorite places involve mountains and pines and winding dirt paths. How about you? Where do you like to go when life gets you down? Where is the air “fresh and sweet”?

Linking up with a song-inspired party, Song-ography.

Wonderful tour through Venice. I find it fascinating how they hang their laundry from the windows and the way they grow flowers on the rooftops. That shot of the narrow street is really cool looking. I’m curious as to if the canals smell like stagnant water or not.

Sigh, sigh, SIGH! Oh those colors! Fantastic photos you used to interpret “Up on the Roof”. We were in Venice a few years ago and were up in the Campanile when the bells started to ring. WOW, what a LOUD (but fantastic) experience THAT was :). Your photos make me sooooo wish to go back there.

These are beautiful photos – there aren’t rooftops anywhere that I’ve ever seen that are as wonderful as European roof tops…I miss them! My favorite view of Paris (where we lived for a long time) was not from the EIffel Tower…but the pompidou center or the arc de triomph…because on the top of those places you were just above the rooftops…and could see so much detail!

I think spending time on a roof would be great fun if it was all decorated and made liveable. Perhaps in my next house? Great photos today!

One of my favorite things to see in photo.. call me crazy.. but are of clean clothes hanging from the line… especially in an urban area. It’s just such a universal image, isn’t it? Loved the tour of Venice as I have never been. Great images relating to the song.. job well done!
