Travel Highlights of 2017

San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge

This year has been one of many travel highlights, and I appreciate them all so much. In 2016, I was housebound for most of the year due to health issues. Once I started feeling better, I was definitely ready to explore our world! We used miles to fly and hotel credits for many of our stays in 2017. Some of our trips were one or two nights only a short drive away. Our big trip was to Europe, flying on miles and taking in historic, amazing sights. Whether you travel a few hours in a car or fly across the ocean, you can always have a grand time getting away!

Here are some of my favorites from our 2017 adventures. I hope these give you some ideas for planning in 2018!

1 NEW YORK New York
We flew here in April, which was perfect for visiting Central Park in all her spring glory. We took in a show — Wicked! The Met, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and walking and walking and walking. All SO fun! I would go back in a New York minute! 2 LAKE TAHOE Lake Tahoe
This was our most relaxing trip, hiking and biking and enjoying nature. We had just moved my mom into a retirement home and arrived here exhausted. A week in the pines was the best medicine! Lake Tahoe

Lake TahoeLake Tahoe3 SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco
Not only is San Francisco one of my favorite places in the world, but this year we were able to share it with our two oldest grandkids. We flew on miles and stayed in a fancy Hilton on Union Square, breakfast included, entirely free. And now we have treasured memories with these fun kids! San Francisco

This is in our hometown of San Diego, and it’s always a relaxing and beautiful place to recharge. Point Loma Cabrillo National MonumentPoint Loma Cabrillo National Monument

5 BERLIN Brandenburg Gate Berlin
Winging our way to Europe, we arrived in this astounding place. History and modern culture are all mixed together. I expected that but still was surprised at the sights you can see by walking around central Berlin. The Wall, the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Tiergarten were all a few blocks from our hotel. I’m still processing all we saw in this vibrant city. 6 PRAGUE Prague
Prague lives up to all the glowing descriptions. Virtually untouched by WWII, it boasts buildings that are centuries old. A castle, the famous Charles Bridge, and the astronomical clock are just a few of the highlights. Prague astronomical clockPrague

7 PARIS Eiffel Tower Paris Paris Shakespeare Bookstore
We ended up in Paris this year, actually due to a snafu of the airlines. We weren’t at all sad about that. I booked a hotel by the stately Pantheon but somehow never believed we would get a room with a view. When we checked in and found we were across the street from the historic building, I couldn’t get over it. Sunrise here in the Latin Quarter, my favorite area, is something I will always remember. Paris Pantheon

8 IDYLLWILD Idyllwild
This is a tiny mountain town a couple of hours from where we live. We ventured there for the Christmas Tree Lighting, and what a fun day! The mayor is a Golden Retriever, so the town is very dog friendly and we took our pooch, Bailey. A few thousand people show up for the festivities. Friendly people, good food, and a tree with 6,000 lights. What a great day! IdyllwildIdyllwild

9 CORONADO
We ended up here, near where we live, to celebrate the holidays. This iconic hotel on the beach has been featured in movies and has hosted heads of state and celebrities. The sunset on the water was perfect. Hotel Del CoronadoHotel Del Coronado

Whether you travel a short ways in your car or hop on a plane and see sights further away, travel can widen your world and introduce you to friendly people and historical places. So, friends, here’s wishing you many new and wonderful experiences in 2018! Hotel Del Coronado

My goodness, you traveled so much, and seen you with your bike, that I wouldn’t have guessed you once had health issues! Am glad that Season has passed once and for all:) Am glad you included some spots in the San Diego area – after all it’s your home base, and it is beautiful. I really miss our regular trips there. It has a cosy-ness that San Francisco lacks. A very happy year to you and your family and thank you for this beautiful New Year’s post!

Happy New Year to you, Jesh! And thank you for all your interesting comments through 2017. Yes, I’m so thankful for every day I feel well now, after going through surgery, chemo, and radiation. That really knocked me out for a while. I’m so grateful that season is behind me. And yes, I do live in a paradise and I appreciate it — in the 80s today while so many are hit with cold and snow. Thanks for hosting Seasons each week!

Lucky you to get such nice weather! When we were there a couple years ago in July the weather was bananas and was freezing cold.

You’ve had a great year! It’s been fun to follow along with your travel on #FarawayFiles. Prague is on my wishlist and one day I’d LOVE to stay at the Coronado! I’ve been in for a visit, but never stayed there! Such a beautiful old gem. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year from Copenhagen!

Happy New Year to you, Erin! Prague is definitely worth a visit. It’s kind of out of the way but well worth the travel to get there. And we do visit Coronado frequently but I have never stayed at the Hotel Del. I just told my husband on my next milestone birthday, that’s what I want to do! Wake up there and be right on the beach all day :).

Fantastic year! You visited so many beautiful and interesting places. I have never been to Idyllwind or seen the Hotel del Coronado. I need to visit those places. I used to write a list of places that I want to visit in the area. Would need to write one for this year. It is a motivation to get out to new places. #FarawayFiles

Wow, you absolutely nailed travel in 2017! I think you’ve been to more spots in the US than I have! Your NY trip looked amazing, I’ve only been there for a couple of days in winter. I can’t wait to get back for warmer weather. #FarawayFiles

Hi Sharon,
What a great travel year 2017 was for you! New York must have looked heavenly in spring. It’s been a while since I’ve been there and all of a sudden, after reading your post, I have Manhattan blues. Hope 2018 will bring only sunshine in your path and many happy travels. #TheWeeklyPostcard

I would enjoy a bike ride in the Lake Tahoe area, such gorgeous views around every bend. Quite familiar with NYC and all its iconic sights, lived there for a while years ago for my then-career. You have much better weather in San Diego, trust me! I hope everyone has safe and fun travel experiences in 2018 no matter the destination. #TheWeeklyPostcard

It’s so good that your health improved in 2017 and you have some great photos to prove it! NYC is a favourite of mine too. I once thought that everyone felt the same way but I have spoken to people who say it’s just another big city – No!

Was the ice cream you had in San Francisco from Ghiradelli? It looks delicious!
