Roadside Lilacs

Julian lilacs

This week I found a lilac bush! It’s too early, but don’t tell this fragrant beauty. Lilac is one of my favorite scents. In the fresh air and sun, these flowers look and smell like spring.

Here’s my random 5 for this week.

1. I got new glasses–my first prescription reading glasses in ages. I’ve been getting by on drug store glasses, but my eyes are tired in the evenings. These are Kate Spade and I love the style. And with insurance and a sale, the frames cost just $28. I can see clearly now, the strain is gone.

2. Today I finished reading The Nazi Officer’s Wife by Edith Hahn Beer. Edith was a young lawyer in Vienna when the Nazi’s invaded in the 1940s. She knew that if she was caught, as a Jew, she would be arrested. When a Nazi officer proposed, she confessed her true identity. He didn’t care, loved her and married her anyway, and she lived out the war hiding in plain sight. I recommend this book as a way to imagine how it would feel to live in fear every moment for years. She comes out triumphant but not unscarred.

3. I’ve been planning a trip, one of my favorite things to do. I’ve spent hours this week browsing Trip Advisor and Booking.com. Do you have any favorite trip planning sites to recommend? Are you a scheduler or do you like a more spontaneous vacation? I would plan every minute if I didn’t rein myself in and allow some flexibility. The research on each place is almost as fun as being there. What’s your style?

4. Related to travel, I’m on the hunt for shoes that I can power through and walk in all day. My running shoes are comfortable, but I’m looking for something dressier than tennies or trainers. Any advice?

5. Happy Spring! I know it’s been a LONG winter for some of you. What are you looking forward to as the weather warms this new season?

How about you? What have you been up to this week?

Sharing with Random 5 Friday and Friday Finds.

Lilac is one of my favorite scents too, but only one kind grows here and the smell is not as strong.

Your reading glasses look like mine!! I have always liked black frames.

Awwwwwwww, lilacs. So pretty so delicate and the fragrance…we don’t have them here in South Texas so this was a special treat.

I love lilacs..have a lilac bush outside here and hoping it will bloom this year as nicely as last. ( Prior year it warmed up too early and then a cold snap and no blooms )

Not sure about the shoes but perhaps try the Keds website to see if they have combos between tennis / dress ? I always found Naturalizer shoes comfortable as well. I have wide feet so not every shoe is the right one for me and I think that Naturalizer has dressy flats and such.

The book sounds good I will have to check that one out. If I am by myself traveling I prefer to be spontaneous, but if it is a family vacation it MUST be planned out otherwise everybody gets very cranky. I love my running shoes for all day walking, but Chaco sandals are awesome as well, just make sure you break them in some before you go, so you don’t get rub spots. I can walk all day in these darlings.

I like lilacs too. It’s hard to believe that they are blooming in your area. May, there’s a good chance it will be May before we see any real blooms.

I love WWII Holocaust stories. I added The Nazi Officer’s Wife to my Amazon wish list. Thank You for the suggestion, Sharon.

You and my husband could exchange vacation notes and be happy as two clams – he is a planer – I like structure, but with some allowance for ‘down’ time. SAS shoes – yes, most of what they have is “geriatric” but honestly one of the best loafers I have ever worn.

Really enjoyed your post! I LOVE the lilacs! They are one of my favorite flowers, and had a yard filled with them when I was a kid. Sadly, they just don’t do well in Texas… way too hot… but could almost smell them from your photo! I too love to travel, and the planning stage is just one of my favorite parts. How did we ever plan stuff without the internet though?? It makes such a difference. I personally like a combination tour and self planned trip. Gives you the best of both worlds! Have a great day!

It will be a while before we are smelling our lilacs! Have you ever tried Clark’s or Ryka’s? I have wide feet and find them both to be extremely comfortable. Hope you have a good trip, and fun planning, too!

Lilac and lavender are my two favorite scents.

When you browse travel websites, be sure to stop every few minutes and close your Internet browser window, then re-start. I read that some sites use cookies to see that you were looking at other sites, and they might shower higher hotel/travel prices, based on the other sites you looked at.

The lilacs are so pretty! Thanks for sharing that book title. I’m reading The Book Thief and my kids are readings. Good deal about WW2 era, so your book would fit right in…for me.

Beautiful lilacs! We have to wait until May before we get them here. Nice new glasses. My husband has just convinced me that I need to get glasses too. We looked at a family picture we had received from his aunt and he talked about two girls who were so similar. When I said that it was impossible to see from that picture, he retrieved a pair of glasses and asked me to try. I was so surprised that I could see their faces! So now I will go and get a test and glasses 🙂 He has tried to tell me that for a very long time, but I wouldn’t listen :D. I also love to make plans for vacations. It is so much fun to search and find what you want to see and do. Have a nice spring weekend!

Oh my, I love lilacs so much, but we don’t have them in Texas. I think the next best thing though if Texas Mountain Laurel…just heavenly in scent. (I have a photo of them in my post from Thursday). I had to join the crowd with glasses last year, progressives, I couldn’t walk down the stairs for months they really took getting used to, haha!

Wow Lilacs already that is something. My mom’s tree is still budding/leafing out. It won’t be until late April probably before it blooms.
Sorry but we so rarely travel that I can’t help with your travel questions.
Congrats on the new glasses, I hope they ease any eye strain you may be having.
The book sounds interesting. I’ll write it down on my list to see if our library has it.

Sharon, Lilacs are one of my favorite flowers – and your photographs are beautiful. Now that spring is here, I’m ready to travel, too. But my travels are usually day trips, with my camera in hand, as I explore back roads and small towns. This is my version of a dream job – meeting new people and telling their stories. Oh, as for shoes, I love the snazzy shoes that are part sneaker part pretty little ballet/flat – sold by Merrell or Sahalie. They are pricey but worth every penny! Thanks for the 5!
