I Want to Break Free

I’ve got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free.
— Queen

This week’s song for Song-ography is Queen’s “Break Free.” I’m going with just the title for a post about breaking free from whatever holds us down — by reading. A book can take us on a journey to anywhere. We’re suddenly free from our day to day world.

Last week we visited a bookstore that had this idea down pat. Here are the signs out front of Ink Books in Idyllwild.

Inside, the joy of imagination is everywhere. You won’t find a boring label in this place.

There’s even a sweet cat who hangs out at the Ink bookstore. Can you guess what this black cat’s name is?

Inky! (Did you guess?)

If you relax on the couch, Inky will be your BFF.

I loved watching a young boy sort through the dinosaur books. He sat on the floor and immediately fell into the world of brontosauruses and tyrannosauruses. That’s what books can do.

This week I’m reading a book that’s taking me to Yellowstone National Park. I’ve never been there, but I can see and hear and smell and feel that place — the pines, the dirt paths, the chill breeze, the bank sloping down to the lake, the campfire crackling in the night.

How about you? When has a book helped you break free?

Linking up with a song-inspired party, Song-ography, where the theme this week is “I Want to Break Free” by Queen.

Books absolutely are the great escape! That’s one of the reasons we try to read so much to our kids. I never want them to hate reading or books!

Wonderful post. I agree that books can indeed help break us free to explore new things and new ideas. I also love that this store has a resident kitty. Nothing better then a good book and a furry friend to share time with.

I so love going to a bookstore… to hold a book in my hand, to turn the pages one by one. You can see I am not one to become an e-book reader! The parking sign in the front cracked me up! And you wanted to know what book carried me away? “Without Reservations”.. a book I always give a friend whenever I can!
