Apple Picking Days

Apple picking time in the mountains! We had the best day in the orchards on our second annual trip. This is definitely a tradition now. Why is picking apples such a wonderful activity for this city girl? Here are some of the reasons.

The sun-dappled reds and greens are beauty in a little ball.

The trees are laden with fruit right now.

The sky is a perfect backdrop.

Apple trees are short. I just reached up and pulled. No ladders needed.

These are organically grown. Pick and eat. Repeat. Clean and healthy.

We met the delightful owner of the orchard, Janet. It looks like Curt is afraid she will take his bag of apples. He says the real issue was fear that apples would drop out of the overfull bag. You can hardly resist picking “just one more,” and our bag filled in a hurry.

Janet is a gem. She asked if we wanted suggestions for lunch in the town. We told her we brought a lunch for a picnic. She promptly invited us to picnic on her porch. Her house sits above the orchard. Here is the view from our shady spot, courtesy of our new friend.

After lunch, Janet chatted with us about her orchard. It’s not a money maker. She’s not in it for the profit. So why does she tend this orchard year after year? She does it so families can come and pick apples. As she said this, the laughter of the kids down the hill drifted up to us. All ages, all generations, enjoy the choosing and eating. The orchard provides a fun, healthy day out in the fresh air and sunshine.

And what says fall better than a crisp, sweet apple?

How about you? Have you gone apple picking this season?

If you are in the San Diego area, I highly recommend apple picking at Gastil Orchard, 1055 Julian Orchards Drive in Julian!

Sounds like a really fun outing, Sharon. I have never been apple picking. I love the contrast and rich colors between the red apples and blue sky.

What a wonderful experience! I’ve never picked apples in a real orchard…only from a single tree, often considered “wild.” This looks like such a fun day in a beautiful place. (You and I are often the first to post on P52, but I forgot to link up last night! I just did the Flickr group post.)

Lovely pictures. It is impractical for us to go apple picking as it is a 4-5 hour trip *one way* to get to an orchard.

I’m happily picking apples from the trees in my yard. I wasn’t expecting fruit this year, but was pleasantly surprised. Yummy!

Nothing like a blue sky to set off the lovely colors of the apples. Lovely photos, and what a refreshing tale of a gardener who grows delicious and healthy for the love of it instead of for the profit.

Wow, such brilliant colors, especially the sky – so gorgeous. The apples there look fantastic! We went to the orchard yesterday and enjoyed the great weather, sunshine and delicious aroma of fresh picked apples. There may be a crisp making day in the near future. ๐Ÿ™‚
