Apple picking time in the mountains! We had the best day in the orchards on our second annual trip. This is definitely a tradition now. Why is picking apples such a wonderful activity for this city girl? Here are some of the reasons.
The sun-dappled reds and greens are beauty in a little ball.
The sky is a perfect backdrop.
We met the delightful owner of the orchard, Janet. It looks like Curt is afraid she will take his bag of apples. He says the real issue was fear that apples would drop out of the overfull bag. You can hardly resist picking “just one more,” and our bag filled in a hurry.
Janet is a gem. She asked if we wanted suggestions for lunch in the town. We told her we brought a lunch for a picnic. She promptly invited us to picnic on her porch. Her house sits above the orchard. Here is the view from our shady spot, courtesy of our new friend.
After lunch, Janet chatted with us about her orchard. It’s not a money maker. She’s not in it for the profit. So why does she tend this orchard year after year? She does it so families can come and pick apples. As she said this, the laughter of the kids down the hill drifted up to us. All ages, all generations, enjoy the choosing and eating. The orchard provides a fun, healthy day out in the fresh air and sunshine.
And what says fall better than a crisp, sweet apple?
If you are in the San Diego area, I highly recommend apple picking at Gastil Orchard, 1055 Julian Orchards Drive in Julian!
