A Winter’s Day Walk

Mission Trails winter

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey;
I’ve been for a walk
On a winter’s day.
I’d be safe and warm
If I was in L.A.
California dreaming . . .on such a winter’s day.

Winter strips color and life away, laying down a challenge to look for bits of life still hanging on. Down at the river, tangles of bare branches sit, waiting for spring.

In this climate where it never snows, leaves are late in leaving the trees. I enjoyed looking around for yellows and reds still valiantly waving in a blue January sky.

The greatest sight in this land of drought is the water. Last week brought days of heavy rains so unusual here, and the river once again flows.

If you’ve ever lived in drought conditions, you’ll know that the sight of abundant water is on the level of the miraculous.

I highly recommend a hike through Mission Trails in San Diego, along the path of the San Diego River, in the shadow of the hills.

Be warned that you may encounter wildlife. On this hike I met puppy Pancake, but he’s totally friendly.

Even in the middle of winter, nature puts on a show.

And with the water flowing through the valley now, we can hope for a lovely spring.

How about you? What does winter look like in your neighborhood?

Pancake is so cute! Lovely pictures of the trail. Here the leaves stay on most of the trees through what they say is “winter” which is a good thing. We don’t get snow either so too have bare trees all winter would be dreary.

Ooh, it looks so spring-like!! Lovely! Here it’s winter – for real, with snow, temperatures below zero, and so on.

Boy!! our California weather is certainly fickle! I woke to rain & now we are looking at pretty blue skies. Inside with a head cold, so I’ll have to enjoy nature through your walk today!

Beautiful dog you have!My 2nd year in North CA, but have lived for about 3 decades in South CA – Both has its advantages and disdvantages. Miss mild temps in winter the most and live too far from the beach now – but now I don’t have to travel to be in the snow:) Have a great week!

what a lovely walk. It’s been quite windy and snowy and cold here. I haven’t been able to get out….I hope the wind will die down a bit down tomorrow so I can walk the beach.

Winter is fairly white in our parts today. Just received a couple of inches of the frozen stuff yesterday. I should be out with my camera, but the old bones just don’t want to get out from under the blanket! Love your shots of California winter. #songography

I want to take puppy Pancake home with me! 🙂 Gorgeous photos. I love the one of the branches all tangled within each other in particular. Thanks for sharing at Song-ography.

ahhhh…. you still have color hanging on. But does it get too cold there? Lovely, lovely shots, I felt like I just had a nice little warm walk on our brisk 30 degree day. it was in the 50s yesterday, so today feels especially chilly.
